WITH THIS ORDER, ISSUED ON THE EVE of the world's second great conflagration of the twentieth century, circumstances were set in place for the mobilization and overseas deployment of the 1st Battalion of one of this country's most distinguished Highland regiments, the 48th Highlanders of Canada.
There was a sense of excitement in the air during these first frantic days, a sense of duty, purpose and even urgency as a peacetime militia regiment prepared for war and an uncertain future.
Few could imagine it would be six long years until the Regiment returned home, and that many of those scurrying about the University Avenue Armoury in Toronto on a thousand-and-one tasks these early days, would be forever left behind on foreign fields.
This is the story of that time, of those men, and of what they endured in the service of their country and for each other.
  May they never be forgotten.
